Fresh From the Salon

Tonight after t-ball I treated myself to a hair cut in the salon.  Pretty sure my last hair cut was before Gabe was born, so uh...kinda been awhile.  No big change, but nice fresh ends = happy momma. Hopefully, the trim was enough to inspire something more than a ponytail when I wake up tomorrow.

Now, I'm feeling in the mood for a fresh look on A List Maker's Life too.  I'm getting out my scissors for a little html cut and paste, so if you check in and it is all goofy for awhile that is why.   Hopefully, an updated design will inspire something more than one random post a week.

We will see...

Crazy Busy Having Fun

This weekend we were living it up and checking things off.

We started our weekend a few hours early when Kevin joined us to head off to Ionia for The Big Ticket Festival.  It was the perfect combination of mud & sunshine, musicians & songs.  The kids were really looked forward to seeing tobyMac, but we all enjoyed hearing Group 1 Crew (and many other groups) while we were waiting.
Outdoor Concert: check.

We have been running low on our favorite peanut butter partner - homemade strawberry jam.  Thanks to Gram we had quarts of delicious fresh berries ready to mash, sugar, and gel.  Stirring our ingredients into jam was a fun project for Gavin and Anne Hope
Strawberry Jam: check.

Thanks to Celebration Cinema and the Family Hope Foundation our family enjoyed a special showing of the just released Cars Movie 2.  We loved the action, humor, and clever animation. After the movie the kids filled up on Cars Movie 2 themed juice boxes, fruit snacks, and macaroni.
A Theatre Movie: check.

While celebrating a special someone's 30th! birthday we walked our favorite board walk to visit the Grand Haven lighthouse. Hopefully this is just the first of many summer beach walks.
Visit a Lighthouse: check.

One of our favorite neighbors also celebrated a milestone birthday and invited us to join the party.
Neighborhood Picnic: check.

This week the kids will craft, sing, play, listen, and visit with friends at Son Surf Beach Bash.
Vacation Bible School: check.

Totally Summer Fun: check. check. check...

Birthday Burgers

Nevermind this is so 3 weeks ago, we made burgers for Gavin's birthday treat.  I'm thinking they might be pretty cute for Father's Day too.  Oh, what's that?  Father's Day has also come and gone?

Well, I have a perfect 4th of July picnic snack for you to make!

We used Grasshopper cookies for burgers, vanilla wafers for buns, colored icing for condiments, and extreme sours for shredded lettuce.  (I saw a variation of this little yummy that used coconut flakes dyed green, but I couldn't quite imagine Gav's first grade friends enjoying coconut as much as sour Air Heads)
In assembly line fashion, Gavin and Anne Hope put these together.
Bun. Burger. Ketchup. Mustard. Lettuce. Bun.

This makes for a mouth full of mixed up flavors, but the kids enjoyed burger bites!

Riding Into Summer

"If I had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall.  I would go to more dances.  I would ride more merry-go-rounds {hayrides}.  I would pick more daisies."

More Precious than Silver

gold·en adj.
1. Of, relating to, made of, or containing gold.
2. Lustrous; radiant: the golden sun.
3. Of the greatest value or importance; precious.
4. Marked by peace, prosperity, and often creativeness: a golden era.
5. Very favorable or advantageous; excellent: a golden opportunity.
6. Having a promising future; seemingly assured of success: a golden generation.

It was late fall of 2003 and I was out shopping with my mom and Gram.  We were in and out of many clothing stores, gift shops, and antique malls.  They tried to convince me to buy this cute top or that adorable shelf decor.  My typical shopping mode is a lot of looking, a lot of debating, a lot of weighing the pros and cons of every purchase, and really a lot of leaving items behind. Our last stop was a local cottage store that refurbishes furniture to looks shabby chic.  Within seconds of walking in the store I quietly slipped to the check out to pay for a lovely white rocking chair. No second guessing or "I'll keep looking."  I suspect as I asked for help loading it into the truck my mom knew something was up!

Promising Future
On October 31st we validated mom's suspitions and shared the news about our family's next chapter, "From now until Memorial Day, prepare your hearts I'm on the way."

Marked by Peace
May 22nd was Gavin's official due date and my first day of maternity leave.  I handed over my lesson plans and said goodbye to a sweet group of second graders.  I settled into the sunshine with a head full of dreams, a few good books, and swollen feet propped high on a pillow. And we waited.

Then 7 years ago today I earned my most important degree: Katie, MOM.

Containing Gold:
He came in his own time (Hmmm....he still comes in his own time).  I may have earned the title on 06.07.04, but there are still many lessons for me to learn about being MOM, and he is one amazing teacher.  In a few short days he will be a second grader himself  (He can be assured of his success...he's already had a full year of second grade).

{his heart = 100% pure}

Totally Summer To Do List

This summer I want to be intentional about making time to PLAY!

Inspired by Jodi Michelle's summer jar project, last night's family fun activity was to brainstorm summer entertainment.  Everyone contributed some of their own wishes and dreams for the lazy days of summer to our list.

Inspired by Little Wonders' Day, who turned her family's "summer bucket list" into an adorable subway art-ish gift, we grew our list with a few more ideas.

Wanting to put together a list like display that was functional {but still cute} we decided on a spin off of the bulletin board put together by The Stories of A to Z.

The final product: totally list lady katie style.

As we complete each activity I hope to have the kids share a favorite moment or overall reaction that we can write inside the fold along with the date.  By the end of the summer we will have a memento of our attempt to make the most of Summer 2011.
Now we just have to count down the last 4.5 days until school is out and we can tackle our Totally Summer To-Dos.

Great Gabe Thank You Note

A year ago today we met with a specialist who confirmed what our doctor expected. We left his office with a new itinerary; we were destined for Spina Bifida. That same day you all began praying for our little traveler by name. Over the last year you have helped us put the wind back in our sails, the chugga chugga in our choo choo...okay, I'll stop.

While this is a journey Gabe will never get away from we are committed to taking every highway that might build on his potential. We will follow any road signs that encourage Gabe’s self determination. And at each rest stop we hope to leave a new sign pointing others to Him who deserves the glory for Gabe’s success.

We have already learned there are detours and even road blocks, but also interesting new sites to explore, beautiful fellow travelers, unexpected treasures, and amazing discoveries to make along the way!

Thank you all for sharing your time, your prayers, and your financial resources to help lighten our load.
We can not thank you enough for your continued love for our family!

Thank you to Dan and Amanda for all of the time and thought they put into planning this event.  Everyone needs the kind of friends they are to us - those who will think outside of the box, those who look for opportunities to bless others, those who quietly clean up the messes instead of just pointing them out, those who are really real, those who make doing life together simple & fun.  We love you long time;)
