This November, Jumpstart will release their newest adventure for Wii learning and entertainment. Escape From Adventure Island is designed for children ages 5-9. While navigating their way through the colorful and cartoon-y 3D world, children are presented with over 150 opportunities to practice reading, math, and critical thinking skills. The mission of Escape From Adventure Island is to collect sand dollars to be traded in for helium. The helium is necessary to get your capsized blimp off the island.
The program, including many individual games features graphics that are colorful and attractive to very young children. The focus of the game goes beyond graphics though, as the goal of the program is educational. With my teacher hat on, I would conclude that they educational content in this game is very appropriate for PreK – early 2nd grade children.
However, Gavin was very impatient with this game. He is used to playing action sports on the Wii and he did not want to take the time to put together his character or to listen to his mission. (I will admit, that I didn't blame him. The instructions are explained very simply, leaving those who catch on quickly to have to wait longer than they may be willing). Gavin immediately began steering his way through the Island looking for action packed games. Therefore, he missed the point that he was in search of sand dollars. He also had a bit of trouble getting used to using the arrow keys to navigate. He was tempted instead to point and move the remote to walk forward and to turn, as he is used to doing in other games. However, there is an option to remedy this problem using the Nunchuck, which we did not have connected.
As his mama, I would like to see him practice this game when he is using the Wii because there are many valuable educational skills that he could be mastering as he plays. I specifically liked the game where he was flying through space looking for letters based on their beginning sounds, and another game where he was to roll toward specific count bys as directed in the instructions. Options are available for tailoring the skill level to your child's age and/or current curriculum content.
