"I Love You Too, Anne Hope"

"Mine!"
"Mom, she called me a baby."
"Mom, he's not sharing."
"But, mom, it's my turn."
"Okay, here..."
"I'm Sorry."
"Gavin, I'm sorry too."
"I'll Forgive you..."
"I Love You Gavin!"
Most of the time these two really are the best of friends. However, this is a typical "behind the scenes" interaction. Thank goodness they are both so quick to apologize and forgive - important traits for sure!

Birthday Wishes

Gavin is sure growing up quickly. He is beginning to figure out the excitement of birthday anticipation. This morning while we were getting groceries at Meijer he asked if we could look at the toy section so he could make a birthday list. Before his nap he wanted me to be sure that I wrote down everything that he said. We talked about how this is just a list of ideas and wishes. I thought it was fun to hear him listing, so I thought I would share it here.

"For my birthday I would like a Gordon party with a blue cake or maybe a white cake with blue frosting. If we can't find Gordon napkins and party stuff I'll prob'ly have to have a garbage truck party. Now please write down the toys I would like, okay mom.
*an umbrella
*a tennis racket (one that is my size)
*tennis balls (we lost ours)
*a fishing pole
*cars movie cars (but I already have Mack so don't write that down)
*a sword thing
*a talking Tonka garbage truck
*new Geo Trax
*Thomas stuff (like Gordon's station)
Wow, that's LOTS of things I said. Isn't it? Oh, one more thing...I want a base drum and a big TUBA." (HA!)

Overcoming Fears

After a successful venture last weekend we thought we might just be able to finish painting the house this weekend. However, things didn't go quite as smoothly as before. We began the tallest side of the house first thing in the morning on Saturday. It didn't take long to realize that this part of the house would require an extension ladder. No problem, we have one...except Kevin was "scared to death" to climb the height. After much coaxing (mostly from Anne Hope), "You can do it daddy!" Kevin decided to give it a try. I was told to keep a tight grip on the base of the ladder and to be ready to catch him if he fell. Kevin made it up about 4 rungs when he said, "Katie, I can't do it! I'm frozen!" Oh dear, this is going to be a long day and an even longer project. I held the ladder for close to an hour as Kevin gained confidence. Believe it or not, by the end of the day Kevin was successfully climbing up to our highest peak without my help. So, although we didn't make the progress we were hoping to on day 2 of house painting. Our (specifically Kevin's) accomplishment was very significant!

Simple Pleasure

At last I have my own, home-grown lilacs. All my life I have dreamt of big bushes of lilacs that I could cut for bouquets at any time...like the kind my gram had. Since we have owned our house we have planted several lilac bushes. While they are beautiful green growing bushes, until today I have never had a lilac bloom of my own. Now I do, so I rushed out with my scissors to cut it and enjoy it inside!

Kevin noticed the flowers right away too..."Something in the kitchen smells like stinky shoes. Oh, its those!" (To each his own...)

Kevin is pretty glad that, unlike my pregnancy with AnneHope's, I have not yet asked for a egg salad and popcorn sandwich!

A Good Start

We fully intend for it to take all summer for us to paint the entire outside of our house and garage. However, today we got a better start than we expected. After a change in forecast saving us from a rain day, we decided to get up and out early to tackle part of the garage.

Ten hours,
perfect sunshine/breeze mix,
plenty of primer,
2 gallons of "Wells Beach" Dutch Boy,
2 trips to the store,
2 bags of gummy worms,
2 great new brushes,
2 fantastic naps on the kid's part...
...and we now have a freshly painted garage, shed, and back of the house.

"YEAH," cheer the 2 happy (somewhat tired out) painters!

Can We Fix It?

Yes We Can!

The kids loved the Bob the Builder exhibit at the Grand Rapids Children's Museum. They finally got to meet all the fun characters they sing about...

"Scoop, Muck, and Wendy - Rolly too - Lofty and Dizzy join the crew. Bob and the gang have so much fun! Working together they get the job done!"

The Gift

Our family was excited about the gifts we put together for our moms and grandmas on Mother's Day. The message in the frame, which we have been thinking about for close to 4 months, was fun to finally share!

Instead of my typical "listing" of our names the gift tag reads, "Happy Mother's Day from ALL of us!"

The Mother of All Mother's Days

I have certainly appreciated the special efforts on the part of Kevin and the kids to make today a very special day indeed. Yet, somehow it seems more appropriate for me to make the effort to show how very thankful I am for these precious ones who made me "mom!"

Down at the Farm

The kids and I visited Teusink's Pony Farm today with Gavin's preschool class. The weather was perfect and Gavin had a great time...

...riding "Lucky" the pony,

petting the baby animals (bunny, kid, lamb, chicks, and ducklings),

and feeding the goats.

Those of you who really know his personality, and "love" for animals, recognize that this is all quite amazing! "What about Anne Hope?" you ask. She was completely convinced she must stay in her stroller far, far away from all the living creatures. (I wonder where she gets that?) Her highlight was the hayride.

Problem Statement

Chapter One: Project Proposal
Part One: Problem Statement
An adult female student from the Meyering household is struggling to put together a problem statement for her thesis project, seemingly due to a lack of instruction, guidance, expereince and guidelines, which in turn is causing undue frustration and stress as the deadline looms.

Okay! So I thought I had a bit of a start with this project business as I already had an idea and several research articles chosen. However, the first piece of the project is due on Monday evening (our first class) and I am not prepared. I guess that typically students write their problem statements in ED660 which is supposed to be taken the semester before graduation. I foolishly took 660 toward the beginning of my program (over 5 years ago) and started a thesis statement instead of a project. So, I sit here now searching for divine inspiration and guidance to get this thing rolling...uh, no really I am stalling...

What is my problem?
What isn't my problem?
Am I stating it clearly?
Where will I find more empirical research?
How many summer hours will be spent at the library?
Is the problem statement 2-4 sentences or 2-5 paragraphs long? (Yes, this is the difference in expectations from one professor to another in the SAME department!)
Where will I find more empirical research?
How many summer hours will be spent at the library?
Will it be worth it? ( I am sure it will be...)

Blah! Blah! It really is my problem and not yours. Sorry for whining!!!

Special Gifts

This week I received two very different, yet very special, surprises from my guys!

1. Because Gavin doesn't have preschool next week, when I picked him up today he was thrilled to present me with a Mother's Day gift. It was so precious to me to get something made by him, for the first time. He was so excited to give his gift and put heart into it. Quite impressively, he had kept it a secret even though I asked several times last week what he was learning/doing at preschool..."I don't know what I did Mom, I forgot." He planted a seedling and decorated the pot. His thoughtfulness showed through in his decision to add pink tiles..." 'cause I think that is your favorite color..." and hearts to the pot. It was all very sweet. I was most proud of my 3 year old when I saw how he had carefully and correctly written his name without my help! (I am sure you other moms out there have had a similar experience and can relate)

2. Kevin surprised me this week with the purchase of a laptop computer. We have talked about this purchase as a "dream" off and on. However, he took me Monday night to pick it up. He decided it would be a "goodluck on your thesis, congrats on your M.A." gift. I am really enjoying it. I am all so thankful to have wireless (much faster) Internet and to be able to sit upstairs by Kevin and visit while I type. YEAH!

I am one lucky momma!
