According to Pregnancy Weekly, “Around the fifth month of pregnancy, the "nesting" instinct can set in. This is an uncontrollable urge to clean one's house brought on by a desire to prepare a nest for the new baby, to tie up loose ends of old projects and to organize your world. Nesting brings about unique & seemingly irrational behaviors in pregnant women. They have also reported doing things like taking apart the knobs on kitchen cupboards, just so they could disinfect the screws attached to the knobs. Women have discussed taking on cleaning their entire house, armed with a toothbrush. There seems to be no end to the lengths a nesting mother will go to prepare for her upcoming arrival.”

Well, I might have been a bit slow to catch on this time but here in my 7th month of pregnancy my nesting instinct has kicked into full gear! It started while I was laying awake in the camper this weekend thinking about what would happen if the baby were to be born in the next 24 hours. SCARY!!! We had a camper to tear down, closets to organize, a hospital bag to pack, a nursery to complete, a cradle to dig out & clean, etc...etc...etc...

I came home Sunday with a plan to tackle one room each day each this week. Irrational maybe... I washed every wall, floor board, ceiling, shelf, knick-knack, window, curtain, towel, sheet, rug and more. I had to laugh about Pregnancy Weekly's mention of taking apart the kitchen. Yes, I took every single dish out of our cupboards and washed them. I also lined everything with contact paper so our dishes wouldn't touch the wooden shelves. YIKES! It is quite possible that I kept the Spic & Span company in business this week with all the product I used.

I could go on, but I better not because I have Christmas cards to address and a freezer to fill with fresh homemade meals before I go to bed tonight - HA! The most ironic thing of all is that I am sure I will have to re-do most (if not all) of this cleaning before our baby finally makes his/her appearance (which will likely be weeks after our anticipated due date)!

  1. wow!! You are a cleaning machine...would you mind coming over and nesting my house too...It's been so long since I had a baby, it really needs it!

  2. It's been a while Kate,,but we think of you often! I think it's fair to say, that cleaning gene didn't come from your Aunt Marie!! I will call soon and see how you are doing:)(all of you)..you're going to break the 'tie' soon, by having No. 3..exciting!! I heard you've been camping(in a pop up, yeah!!)..and all that cleaning has now made me tired. I remember the nesting instinct, well. I remember steam cleaning furniture, while in labor. Im sure a lot of Moms have similar stories, just as you said:) Love to you all. Aunt Marie

Thanks for taking a moment to comment. I love to hear from you!
