Can You Guess???

It is time for a few more family trivia questions. Let's see what you know!

1) Who celebrates a birthday in January? (Name 2)

2) What is the preference of the majority...sand or snow?

3) Whose middle name is Michael?

Torn

I am currently reading Eat Pray Love, by Elizabeth Gilbert. (It was one of my many special Christmas surprises.) The following passage caught my attention.

“Generally speaking, Americans have an inability to relax into sheer pleasure. Americans spend billions to keep themselves amused…but that is not exactly the same thing as quiet enjoyment. This is the cause of the great sad American stereotype – [those] who go on vacation, but who cannot relax.” (p.61)

The student/teacher part of me sees this precious time between Christmas and New Year’s Day as a vacation from all the hustle and bustle of the month past and the new activities in the year to come. As I gear up for the many nights of master’s study that winter ’08 will bring, I find myself torn over how to most enjoy the moments I have to relax now!

1) watch the "history making" Patriots vs. Giants game with Kevin
or watch the DVD I rented this afternoon
2) begin painting the trim in the living room
or put the furniture back in place for tomorrow’s guests
3) finish my 2007 family scrapbook or create a cover page for 2008
4) go to bed and read my new book or go to bed and sleep

So as not to become a “sad part of the great American stereotype," tonight I will choose something I love to do and enjoy it to the fullest!

Now Showing...

Tonight we set out on a Christmas light tour around town. We found one neighborhood that was especially showy. Gavin counted 4 Santas in 1 lawn (How is that possible Mom?)

On the way home we picked up the movie The Nativity Story. We watched it last year, but it serves as a good reminder about the reason for the season every year. It also got us thinking about our favorite Christmas flicks.

1) Kevin – It’s a Wonderful Life
2) Katie – Family Man
3) Gavin – Polar Express (“…and I’m not scared of it anymore!”)
4) Anne Hope – Wowie Bozowie Christmas

What holiday film do you look forward to seeing each Christmas?

Trivia Time

Which flavor of ice cream was not mentioned on our favorites list?
A)Blue Moon
B)Superman
C)Bubble Gum

Kelly and Katrina both have December birthdays.
True or False?

When we go to the movie theatre do most of us prefer comedy or drama?

Penguin Play

This morning we enjoyed the Grand Rapids Children's Museum with Grandma. The winter exhibit is called Penguin Play and features a large wintery play structure complete with "snowballs" to slide into.

Today's museum favs included...
1) Dressing up as a fire fighter ("and the boots was tooooo big for me")
2) Decorating a ceramic tile with "sparkly pretties"
3) Playing bank teller
4) Pounding the drums
5) Listening to the balls hit the bells as they went down the slide
5) Fishing from the play boat

Snowman Slush

Yesterday the kids and I bundled up for a fun afternoon of building snow people. Gavin had many expectations for how our snowmen should look.

"A good snowman must have..."
1) A Hat
2) A Scarf
3) Buttons
4) Black Eyes
5) A Carrot Nose

Lucky for us we have a great snowmen building kit with all the supplies (except the snow). As you can see the amount of snow mounded together to create the 3 parts of the snowman's body was not especially important to the kids. They just wanted to decorate their little snow creatures.

This morning we discovered that a good snowman must also have adequate body mass to survive in this less than freezing weather. So, although we had a fantastic time building our little snow people yesterday; today they are snowman slush.

Celebration

We had a fun time at our family Christmas party last night.

The party included:
1) Lots of food
2) Crafts for the kids
3) A Promise for Christmas
4) Gifts
5) Homemade Ice Cream & Green Punch (according to tradition!)
6) First Edition Family Trivia

Although the trivia was quite spirited, we didn't have a chance to feature a question from each of the family members who were included. So, I thought it would be fun to post a couple questions each week and see if we can have a bit of online participation. If you are up for it, post your answers in the comment section. HAVE FUN!

1) Whose favorite holiday of the year is Memorial Day?
2) Which electrician in the family is afraid of high voltage?
3) What soda should Grandma stock in her fridge - Coke or Pepsi?

'Tis the Season

Wednesday evening we had a great time decorating cookies with our fabulous friends. The cookie creations took on many interesting shapes, colors, and designs. Each "Baker, Baker Cookie Maker" had a picture taken with his/her favorite edible masterpiece.

The top 5 were...
1) Gavin - "M&M Star"
2) Anne Hope - "Yummy Sprinkles"
3) Jeremy - "Pretty Package"
4) Annie - "Imaginative Star"
5) Kevin - "Adorable Angel"

Now the top 5 are...
... EATEN!!!

Why Not?

I always hesitated to start a family blog:

1) Who do I think I am that others would really want to read about my family's daily events and adventures?
2) Do I want pictures and information posted for the world to see?
3) Will I keep up with my entries or become the never changing blog?
4) How will I come up with clever headings and titles like those I appreciate on others' entries?
5) What if I "publish" my misspelled words and incorrect punctuation for everyone to edit as they read?

Although I could still list several reasons for not thinking we NEED a blog devoted to our everyday moments, I have decided to start one today because...

1) It's fun!
2) I enjoy writing.
3) Perfection isn't necessary.
4) I am proud of my amazing husband and children.
5) Our extended family may appreciate another way to stay in touch.

So, if you are interested I hope you will continue to check back on what is new and noteworthy in this listmaker's life!
